The Optimist Club of Marble Hill presents the Optimist Essay and Oratorical Contests. These contests are open to students under the age of 19 as of October 1, 2020. Local winners will advance to higher level competitions, earn scholarships prizes and gain experience in writing and public speaking. Local students recent years have won at district and national levels, earning thousands of dollars in prizes The Essay topic for this year is “Reaching your DReams by Choosing Optimism.” Contest rules and entry forms are attached and also will be sent by email to language arts teachers. The District price is $2,500. Essays must be submitted by january 23, 2021. Point of contact is Suw Brewer, 235-0045 or [email protected]. The Oratorical topic for this year is “Healing the World with Optimism.” Contest rules and entry forms are attached and also will be mailed to speech teachers. The local oratorical contest will be late February , with a specific time and place to be announced. The winner at the World competition can win as much as $22,500 in prizes. The point of contact for the oratorical in Kenneth Shrum, 238-5343. To give students practice in following rules, organization of thought and communicating through writing, the Optimists have conducted a parallel consent for middle-school students and will continue to do the same this year. It is time again for Murray State University’s Commonwealth Honors Academy, and this year, we celebrate 20 years! (We tried to celebrate 20 years last summer, but COVID prevented us from doing so. So, we try again). The 2021 Academy will be held June 5 to June 26, 2021. The Academy brings together 1120 rising high school seniors from Kentucky and the surrounding region for three weeks for an exciting challenging academic enrichment program. As a reminder, upon the completion of the academy, students will:  -Receive six (6) hours of honors-level university studies credit;  -Have the opportunity to take an additional six hours of tuition-free university courses at Murray State University during their senior year; and  -Be awarded a four-year $2,000 renewable housing scholarship to attend Murray State University  Please help the CHA Leadership Team in identifying juniors who might be qualified for this selective program. To qualify for the academy, students must have  -Completed the junior year of high school  -A composite ACT of approximately 25 (or equivalent on the SAT, PSAT, or ACT ASPIRE), and a 3-5 GPA on the 4-0 scale. -Other credentials, such as community involvement, class rank, and teacher other credentials, such as community involvement, class rank, and teacher recommendations, that are taken into consideration in the selection process. We also would like to ask you to encourage potential CHA applications to take the ACT no later than December 2020 to qualify for the Academy.  Applications for the 2021 academy can be found on our website:  http://www.murraystate.edu/cha.
