6th Grade Changes 2017-2018

For Your Information

In order to assist with the transition from 6th grade to 7th grade we are implementing a schedule to help facilitate that transition.  Our plan is to have core 6th grade classes (Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies) in the morning at the elementary and then transition the 6th graders to enrichment classes in the junior high in the afternoon.  They will be in core classes for 61 minutes per subject.  In the afternoon classes, they will be exposed to PE, Art, Writing, Accelerated Math, Geography, Speech, Music, Foreign Language, and/or Band.    All students will get the required amount of PE, Art, and Music.

Sixth graders will also have chromebooks for the 2017-2018 school year.  We are very excited to continue our goal of one to one technology.

Sixth graders will have lockers, conveniently located across from the elementary office, with access to them while they are in the elementary and junior high.  They will be able to go to their lockers between each class and at the end of the day.  They will be dismissed at 2:58 to go to their lockers and then go to the bus.  They will be the first students on the buses.

Fifth and sixth grade will eat lunch at the same time and will be eating in the multipurpose room.

Sixth grade will also still have the opportunity to be in the Elementary Student Council consisting of grades 5 and 6.  We will also continue to offer Girl’s Club for 6th grade girls.  Junior Beta Club is offered for grades 6, 7, and 8.

Mrs. Bristow will still be the administrator for all sixth grade students.  All discipline will be handled by Mrs. Bristow.  The sixth grade students will still have classroom parties at Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day.  Sixth grade will also participate in Play Day.

Fifth and sixth grade girls will continue to be allowed to participate in volleyball and fourth, fifth, and sixth grade boys and girls will continue to be allowed to participate in basketball.

Our goal is to ease the transition for sixth grade students from 6th to 7th grade.  Many of our students get to 7th grade and struggle because of the major change.  With this schedule, we are able to still have the homeroom feel of the elementary classrooms in the mornings while allowing them to experience the switching of classrooms of junior high in the afternoons.  The administration and faculty of the Meadow Heights School District is committed to making this transition from elementary to junior high successful for all students both socially and academically.
