Course Resources:
Students should come to class prepared for learning. All textbooks used in the class will stay within the classroom. Chromebooks will be used in class for educational purposes only.
Proper classroom behavior is expected of all students in the classroom at all times. The student should:
- Be on time and ready to go
- Be respectful of everyone/everything
- Participate in class discussions
Class overview:
- Students are required to construct multiple projects of varying materials throughout the school year.
- The grade in this class will be based on project planning, safety in the laboratory with includes passing safety tests, project progression and completion.
Project Requirements:
- Students must complete one large metal project, or several small metal projects that require a minimum of 90 hours of laboratory time. They will also be required to create a woodworking project based on their level and participate in small engine repair activities.
- The instructor will keep a logbook of student progress and progression towards their 90 hours. Students may ask where they are in their progression before or after class.
- Working on another student’s project does not count toward the 90 hours necessary to pass the class, it must be on the student’s own project.
Leadership development and supervised agricultural experience programs are an integral part of this course. All students are expected to be a part of the FFA chapter. Public Law 740 states, “FFA is an inter-curricular part of the agricultural classroom.” FFA Membership dues are $25 and due on Friday, September 7th for Fall FFA activity participation. Dues include magazine subscription, state & national dues, and chapter t-shirt.
Safety Requirements
-Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) MUST be used at all times and is non negotiable. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain all PPE.
-Students will be assigned a set of glasses for the year and have the right to use and lock one locker. Loss of the glasses or failure to return the glasses in a good condition at the end of the year will result in a $5 replacement fee. Leather gloves, cutting goggles, and welding helmets are available for use and SHOULD NOT be kept in the locker. The instructor reserves the right to look in any locker at any time, and to prevent the lock from being cut an additional key or the combination should be provided to the instructor. Keeping gloves or helmets that belong to the Ag Dept in individual lockers is a safety hazard to other students and will result in a loss of lab safety points.
-Students will need to have available the following PPE: long jeans, long sleeve (100% cotton) shirt, closed toe and closed heel shoes.
-Failing to wear any specified PPE while using shop equipment or being in the shop will result in loss of lab points and will prevent the student from participating in the lab until the necessary report is finished. Students will be given no warnings in regards to PPE. Expectations will be made clear at the beginning of the year. Failure to wear the proper PPE for a procedure will result in a student completing a lab safety report. Until the report is finished to the instructor’s satisfaction, the student will lose hours in the shop and only receive ½ credit for lab safety. Therefore, failing to use PPE correctly will make passing the class incredibly difficult.
-Students that either purposely or carelessly put another student in harm's way will also be immediately called from the lab setting and expected to write a safety report. Realize that accidentally, jokingly, or purposefully putting another student or the instructor in danger will be taken very seriously by the instructor and administration.
-Incorrectly using equipment will result in a loss of lab safety points and the student will again be required to fill out a lab safety report.
Course Objectives and/or Description:
Students will gain practical knowledge and skills in areas of agriculture mechanics and agriculture construction. approximately 25% of the students’ time will be spend in the classroom and the other 75% will be in the agricultural mechanics laboratory-shop.
Units of Study:
Student progress is based on individual student level of knowledge, difficulty of projects, and quickness to learn. Each individual student will work at their pace.

Grading Policy:
- ●Each student must score 100% on each safety exam before entering the Ag mechanics lab.
- ●When students are in the laboratory they will be graded on a 10 point per day basis. Students will be graded on safety, work ethic, and cleanliness.
- ●Students are required to keep up their record books, to complete one article summary per month, and one news bulletin per semester. There will also be various assignments throughout the semester.
Students should make all attempts to pass this class. Ms. Burgfeld is always available to discuss support structures for your child’s education. If the student, the parent and the teacher all act proactively, we shall achieve success together.
Students with continuous missing work and/or a failing grade at designated checkpoints will be assigned to after school tutoring in the subject(s) until work/grade is brought current or passing. Grades included in checkpoints are mid-quarter grades and end-of-quarter grades.
Repeatedly not turning in minor in-class work, etc. would result in tutoring assignment after three missing assignments during the quarter. Grades are due on due date with 10 day grace period. After 10 days max score on assignment is 70%.
Attendance Policy:
Students have the equivalent amount of days to make up all assignments as the number of days missed due to an excused absence. Work may be made up before or after school and must be scheduled with the course instructor. It is the student’s responsibility to collect ALL missed work during their absences.
Plagiarism/Academic Dishonesty Policy:
Plagiarism and academic dishonesty are serious offenses. The academic work of a student is expected to be his/her own effort. Students must give the author(s) credit for any source material used. To represent ideas or interpretations taken from a source without giving credit is a flagrant act. To present a borrowed passage after having changed a few words, even if the source is cited, is plagiarism. Students who commit any act of academic dishonesty will receive a failing grade in that portion of the coursework. Acts of academic dishonesty will be reported to the administration.
